If you like the idea of having a garden but don’t have the space (or the time) for one, a mini garden might be a perfect solution. Making a mini garden for your apartment is easy, and there are many ways to add your own creative touch. We’ve gathered some ideas to get you started.
Make a Terrarium
Terrariums are lovely to look at, and they take almost no time to set up. All you need is a glass container – a punch bowl, an apothecary jar, or a small fishbowl, for example – a plant or two, and some rocks (you may also need a bit of soil, depending on the plants you choose). Look online for inspiration, and if you’re not feeling confident in your terrarium-building skills, you can always order a terrarium kit.
If your terrarium will have a lid or be completely enclosed, add a layer of activated charcoal to the soil or rock (you can find this in any store with aquarium supplies). The charcoal helps prevent root rot and controls musty odors.
Grow Herbs Indoors
Many herbs grow well indoors, as long as they have a lot of light. Group herbs together in identical pots or jars, for a uniform look. If you have a sunny balcony, you could start your herbs there and move them indoors when temperatures drop. Put the herb containers inside a long wooden box, a wire crate, or some other container that makes it easy to move all of your herbs at once.
Get a Zen Garden
A Zen garden has no plants, but it does give you the ability to “tend” to something. A lot of stores sell desktop Zen garden kits, which consist of a low and wide container, sand, tools (usually a tiny rake and shovel), and stones.
