Destinations for Cyclists
One of the reasons people love living at 82 Flats is that we’re close to major shopping areas, restaurants, and nightlife spots. We’re also just a few miles east of the Monon Trail, which you can access from 86th Street.
The trail extends from downtown Indy north to Sheridan, with plenty of interesting stops along the way. If you’re planning to explore the Monon, here are some destinations you might want to visit:
Big Lug Canteen, in Nora
This brewery and gastropub on 86th Street is a great place to go when you want comfort food – burgers, poutine, and the like. (Check in advance for operating hours or dining policy updates).
Central Park West, in Carmel
Head north on the trail and take a detour at 111th Street to explore the Central Park West trails. Sights to see include a lagoon, a wetland garden, and native wildflowers in the summer. From here, continue your journey north to see Kawachinagano Japanese Garden, which is adjacent to the section of trail that passes through downtown Carmel.
Festiva, on the Near Northside
If authentic Mexican fare is what you’re looking for, ride your bike south to 16th Street and check out Festiva. This charming little restaurant just east of the Monon has a (heated) outdoor patio and is a popular destination for a leisurely brunch.
Mass Ave Cultural District
Follow the trail to its southern terminus, and you’ll arrive at the Mass Ave Cultural District. This vibrant area is home to boutique retailers, independent eateries, taverns, and art galleries. One of the most interesting buildings in this area is The Athenaeum, built in 1893. This massive and ornate building is home to The Rathskeller, an authentic German restaurant with an outdoor beer garden, and Coat Check Coffee, which occupies what once was a theater lobby.
