Avoiding Winter Blues
If you live in Indianapolis, you know that the winter months can be full of plenty of cheer but also plenty of bitter cold. That means you may avoid the outdoors and stay inside, but too much of the indoors can really bring down your mood and overall well-being. Residents of 82 Flats at the Crossing are lucky to have apartments near Keystone at the Crossing so premium shopping is always an option. But you don’t have to stop there. Try out some of our top tips for staying active in winter!
#1: Plan It
Most goals won’t be completed without a plan! To ensure you stick to your healthy habits, make a simple plan and actually follow it. You can approach it in a variety of ways. If you have a consistent schedule, then pick a few days with openings and schedule your workout time. If you have a more unpredictable schedule, then commit to moving a certain number of times every week. Finally, if you’re already struggling with a sedentary lifestyle, start slow and ramp up. Once a week for two weeks, twice a week for another two, and so on. Missed a session? It’s okay to start over!
#2: Dress For It
You’re a lot more likely to get active if you’re dressed for the occasion. Try laying out your workout clothes the night before so they’re ready to go. It will leave less room for excuses. In case that’s not enough, try going to bed in some of your workout gear, like your t-shirt, and you’ll already be halfway there. You can also try investing in some fun workout gear that you actually want to wear. Athletic apparel has really taken off in recent years so you’ll have plenty of fashionable options.
#3: Find a Buddy
A lot of activities are exponentially more fun with someone to do them with. Find a buddy to join you on your health journey. They can also be a great source of accountability. Meet up with them for workouts, check in during the week, or you can even swap healthy recipe ideas. A friend is also great to have around when you fail. They can help you work through why you failed and encourage and support you to get back on track.
#4: Think Long-Term
There’s a huge temptation to give up on healthy choices when you don’t get instant results. You can’t expect to drop a ton of weight or suddenly see a completely different person in the mirror. It takes time to create that kind of change. Instead, think about a long-term goal. What can you achieve by the end of the season? That’s a few months worth of time and will help you be reasonable and accountable all at once. Still looking for that short-term gratification? Rest assured that staying active even in the winter has a huge positive impact on your mental and physical health.
#5: Keep It Cozy
Let’s be real. One of the biggest reasons you’ll want to avoid staying active in the winter is the cold. The best way to get past that problem is to keep things warmer! Make sure your room is cozy when you wake up by keeping the thermostat at a nice temperature in the morning. You can also keep some cozy clothes near your bed so when you get up you can layer up. If your workout area is a little chilly, you can get a small space heater, but be sure to turn it off when not in use for safety reasons.
#6: Check Local Options
Another smart way to stay active is to sign up for some kind of group or class that meets regularly. The best part: a lot of groups these days are free! Check out a local bulletin board or even a Facebook page dedicated to staying active in your area. You can search by activity, like walking, hiking, running, healthy cooking, etc. You can also search by age range or community. If you want to get moving and give back, you can look for a charitable organization that needs volunteers to do something active, like sorting donations, or even register for a walk or run sponsored by a charity and train for it.
#7: Go Outside, Really
There’s no doubt about it. Nothing beats the great outdoors! Instead of constantly avoiding the cold, learn to embrace it. Even a short 15-20-minute walk outside can do wonders for your state of mind and bodily health. It will also give you some much-needed sun, which can really boost your mood. To make the outside more appealing, be sure to invest in quality layers and use accessories like gloves or mittens, hats, scarves, and leg warmers to keep your extremities plenty warm.
